SoHo Penthouse

New York City, N.Y., USA

A stylish sanctuary in the heart of Lower Manhattan.

Located at Grand Street, a busy artery connecting the beating heart of SoHo to Brooklyn and Queens, interior designer Jennifer Paccione Angulo has transformed a minimal, full-floor penthouse into sophisticated living quarters.

“We wanted to lend a lived-in comfort to the space while maintaining the integrity of interior architecture,” Angulo says of the 348m2, four-bedroom home that also features an expansive private terrace.

Primarily open plan, the challenge was to assign purpose to the multiple, segmented rooms of the space whilst offering respite from the bustling city outside. Embodying modern needs for function and comfort, the interior’s tranquil disposition is underpinned by considered elements in natural materials: leather, wood, metal and stone in neutral hues are both the backdrop to and the accoutrements of a home where craftsmanship and materiality abound.

“Fritz Hansen pieces, in many ways, speak to the unique design of this space. Considering the space, we were mindful as to which products we brought in, as we knew these pieces had to complement and further elevate such high design.”

Strong in presence yet subtle in form, Fritz Hansen pieces tie the space together. Poul Kjærholm’s commanding PK81™ daybed in cognac leather is an elevated centrepiece in the open-plan den, nestled between wooden slatted walls and a feature staircase.

“The moment we placed [the PK81] in that room, without anything else, the room just instantly felt complete. It was such a dynamic statement, seen from so many different viewpoints in the house that made it feel very central,” Angulo notes. The daybed’s stringent form is offset by the curved comfort of Arne Jacobsen’s Pot™ chair, upholstered in tonal fabric.

Elsewhere, the Egg™ chair features in a raised living area, its embracing shape and butter-soft leather upholstery counterbalancing the exposed brickwork and angular lines of the room. A second living area with the Lune™ sofa in a rich aubergine hue, black leather PK8™ chair and Planner™ coffee table topped with cream-coloured marble offers a snug and indulgent hideaway. The result is a home that emanates the composure and grace of thoughtful, lasting design.
