Fritz Hansen Place Jakarta

Jakarta, Indonesia

A Dialogue Between Danish Design and Indonesian Culture

In the centre of Jakarta, the newly renovated Fritz Hansen Place presents a novel interpretation of what a design showroom can be. Conceived as a destination for design, culture, and sound, it brings together Danish modernism and Indonesian craftsmanship in a cohesive, multi-sensory environment.

At its core, the F.H. Café & Sound Room introduces an experiential dimension to the space. The café offers a relaxed setting furnished with iconic pieces by Arne Jacobsen — including the Series 7™, Swan™, and Drop™ chairs — alongside contemporary designs such as Jaime Hayon’s Fri™ and Analog™ tables. The Sound Room, equipped with a Dynaudio system, is designed for focused listening, featuring curated vinyls, vintage CDs, and a private lounge for experiencing sound in its purest form.

The renovation was led by Yuni Jie, whose design approach balances Scandinavian restraint with Indonesian warmth. This is expressed in the SUMBA Lounge Collection, a limited-edition series of Ro™ and Fri™ chairs upholstered in Kvadrat textiles inspired by Sumba’s traditional woven fabrics. The collection reflects a dialogue between form and colour, as well as between global and local craft traditions.

Jie’s collaboration with Floorstudio on TENUN – Weaving the Thread of Indonesia extends the architectural language of the space through bespoke carpets and wall art, translating local motifs into a modern design vocabulary. An installation by DuAnyam, a social enterprise supporting over 1,600 women artisans across Indonesia, further emphasises the project’s commitment to craft and community.

Through these interconnected elements, Fritz Hansen Place Jakarta functions as both a showroom and a cultural platform — an ongoing exchange between Danish design principles and Indonesian material culture. The project highlights how the clarity, material honesty, and human-centred approach inherent in Danish design allow it to move naturally across cultures, integrating seamlessly into new contexts while remaining true to its core values.
