"IT'S LESS ABOUT DESIGNING A HOUSE. MORE ABOUT CREATING A MOOD."

Summertime stories: Sophia Roe and Philip Messmann

There’s a corner in Sophia Roe and Philip Messmann’s garden where the light hits just right in the afternoon. Slightly hidden, a few degrees warmer than the rest, it’s where they tend to drift—books in hand, drinks within reach, the rest of the world quietly on pause. “It’s the spot we always end up in,” Sophia says. “It just has a feeling.” This gentle attention to atmosphere defines the couple’s summerhouse in Asserbo, Denmark, a quietly romantic escape brought back to life with a cool, contemporary edge. Sophia is a stylist and part of the family-run creative studio behind Louise Roe; Philip, a photographer known for his editorial and lifestyle work. Both work internationally, often together, styling and shooting projects that blur the lines between art, design and daily life. “We’d both been craving something slower after years in the city,” Sophia explains. “One summer evening, biking through Asserbo, we stumbled upon the listing. It felt quiet, grounded—almost forgotten. We immediately had an urge to put our touch to it.”

“We looked for pieces that felt calm and aged well—like they belonged here all along,” says Sophia. “Nothing shiny, nothing trendy.”

The effect is a kind of soft permanence—nothing rigid, everything rooted. Even gatherings feel unforced. “We always dreamed of having a place where friends and family could stay for the weekend,” Sophia says. “Now it’s happening.” As for summer rituals, they’re more about rhythm than routine. “Coffee barefoot on the terrace. A slow breakfast with music playing. A swim in the sea or a bike ride through the forest,” Sophia says. “Afternoons napping in the sun or reading somewhere shaded. Friends dropping by, dinner outside that lasts until it’s dark. This has happened quite often this spring—it’s really like living a dream.”
