Established in 2008, Studio Roso is a creative partnership between Danish designers Sophie Nielsen and Rolf Knudsen. With backgrounds in architecture, art, and design, their work captures the ephemeral beauty of light, colour, and reflection. Their hybrid practice allows them to explore both large-scale, site-specific sculptures and more intimate, design-driven pieces. Studio Roso’s collaboration with Fritz Hansen has resulted in the Mirror Series, a collection of round, oval, and long mirrors that are equal parts practical and artistic. Handmade from painted aquarelle graphics, each mirror is individually printed, ensuring that no two are the same. The result is an ever-changing interplay of light and colour, where hues shift depending on the angle and surroundings.
Your work explores the ephemeral nature of our environment. How does this idea come to life in your Mirror Series?
The mirrors are designed not just as functional objects, but as objects that respond to their surroundings. The reflective surfaces do not offer a static reflection like a traditional mirror; they capture fleeting moments and shifting perceptions as the viewer moves around them or as the light changes throughout the day. Each of your mirrors is unique, with no two exactly alike. Why is this individuality important to your design approach?
We see design not as a means of producing identical objects, but as a way to create living pieces that evolve with their surroundings and users. By embracing variation, we allow each mirror to capture a different play of light, color, and reflection—making the piece interactive and personal. What do you hope people experience when they live with one of your mirrors?
Like a favourite painting, we hope that people living with one of our mirrors will feel it merges seamlessly with their space and life. Our intention is for each mirror to become more than just a decorative object—it should feel like a living part of the room, quietly reflecting the changing light, seasons, and moods of its environment.
