LEATHER

Republic of Fritz Hansen™ has very strict requirements when it comes to the quality of the types of leather we use to upholster furniture. Many of the types of leather are especially produced for Republic of Fritz Hansen’s tightly upholstered furniture. We have enjoyed a close relationship with the leading Danish leather supplier for many years. Their more than 35 years of experience ensure the highest quality of hides from the best tanneries in the world.
The hides are primarily from Europe where the animals have good living conditions and the hides have fewer natural markings.

NATURAL LEATHER
Natural is an exclusive and naturally beautiful type of leather of the most exquisite European oxhide and can be distinguished by its soft and pleasant touch. Natural is vegetable tanned, aniline leather. Its raw and natural surface allows the leather to breathe and offers excellent sitting comfort as well as a feeling of exclusivity. The leather is full grain, which means that its natural surface structure has been preserved and all natural markings are visible. Natural markings are the hallmarks of the animal’s active life and give the piece of furniture a unique sense of character. Natural leather varies in colour from hide to hide and acquires a beautiful, darker patina with use and exposure to sunlight.

RUSTIC LEATHER
Natural/Rustic leather is exclusive leather of the finest quality. The leather has a natural surface, which mirrors the active life of the animal. Insect bites and scars were a natural part of the daily life of the animal and the natural markings are part of the leather’s expression and will be visible together with other natural markings such as neck wrinkles, beauty marks etc.
It is a vegetable tanned and chrome free aniline leather. Rustic has a natural and light structure with visible natural markings and no protective lacquer. Each hide is unique and over time it will lighten and patinate in use and exposure to sunlight.

ELEGANCE LEATHER

Elegance is an exquisite type of leather of the finest quality European oxhide. It has an exclusive and natural look and is soft and pleasant to the touch. Elegance is aniline leather and is chrome tanned but then subsequently vegetable tanned, which gives the leather greater firmness. This type of leather has a natural and raw surface, allowing the leather to breathe and offers excellent sitting comfort as well as a feeling of exclusivity. The leather is full grain, which means that its natural surface structure has been preserved and all natural markings are visible. Natural markings are the hallmarks of the animal’s active life and give the piece of furniture a unique sense of character. Elegance leather varies in colour from hide to hide and acquires a beautiful, lighter patina with use and exposure to sunlight.

MAINTENANCE & CARE (NATURAL/RUSTIC/ELEGANCE LEATHER)
The best advice for care of all types of leather from Fritz Hansen is regular vacuum cleaning using a soft brush. Avoid use of detergents and sharp objects. Never apply chemicals, sulphonated washing and cleaning detergents or fats (leather polish/oil).
If cleaning is required, use boiled water with good-quality natural soap flakes. Whisk 2-3 tablespoons of soap flakes in 1 litre of water and use only the foam. Spread the foam with a soft cloth over the entire piece of furniture. Let it dry and wipe carefully with a soft cotton cloth. Never place leather furniture in direct sunlight or close to a radiator, which may cause the colour to fade and the leather to dry out.
Natural-coloured leather is a very delicate type of leather and will easily absorb liquids, e.g. spilled drinks/oils and fats. Only try to remove stains if absolutely necessary as the leather is easily damaged by cleaning attempts.

WHITE LEATHER
White is a type of leather of the finest quality oxhide and combines a natural look with the practical. The leather is semi-aniline and full grain, which means that the natural surface structure has been preserved. The leather has been treated with a light finish, making the hide more resilient and easier to look after. White is soft to the touch and offers excellent sitting comfort. The surface of the lighter colours may seem more concealed as many pigments are often used in the process. White is also more susceptible to dirt than other colours.

MAINTENANCE & CARE-CLASSIC / SOFT LEATHER
Pigmented leather is surface treated and thus well protected against external influences as long as the pigmentation is intact. The pigmentation makes it difficult for dirt; water etc. to penetrate the leather surface. For cleaning use a clean, soft cloth. Do not use stain removers, sulphonated liquids or solvents on Classic/Soft leather.
