HILTON COPENHAGEN AIRPORT.
”We chose the furniture from Fritz Hansen from an
architectural and functionalist point of view – because the
timeless design matches the architecture of the hotel perfectly –
but also because the company fully complies with the demands we
make on our suppliers in terms of quality, delivery and
environmental issues”.
The 5-star luxury Hilton Copenhagen Airport hotel opened on
February 1, 2001. The hotel boasts 12 floors, 4 towers and one
atrium – 382 rooms, fitness centre, pool and sauna as well as two
restaurants, a bar and a lounge.
The architecture of the hotel is based on the four towers that
provide a view of the activities in the airport, the ocean and the
bridge to Sweden as well as the rooftops of the island. Hilton
Copenhagen Airport complements the airport buildings very well,
e.g. with the canopy over the main entrance facing the Terminal 3
which has the same look as the window surroundings on the control
towers of the airport.
The design philosophy behind the hotel was to find a
well-proportioned balance between the interior and exterior of the
hotel – with pure lines and light design reflecting the interior of
the hotel.
President of the hotel, Allan L Agerholm, is one of the most
experienced men in the hotel trade in Denmark – in spite of his
only 40 years of age. He was 21 years old when he took over the
Hotel Danica in Horsens and became the youngest hotel owner in
Denmark. Later he left for England working for 10 years as head of
restaurant and later hotel manager. After England the family moved
back to Copenhagen in 2000 where Allan Agerholm started as the
Director of Operations prior to the opening of the Hilton
Copenhagen Airport. After a couple of years in Stockholm he
returned to Copenhagen again in the autumn of 2004 where Allan L
Agerholm started in his present position.
Agerholm explains that Hilton has a fixed code of practice that
must be complied with in order to become a Hilton supplier:
Credibility, values matching those of Hilton, and focus on the
environment while obeying all current agreements.
”At Hilton we focus on the social responsibility, not only in
the organization internally but also in the relationship with our
partners,” says Allan L Agerholm.
This policy is also evident when we select the suppliers for the
hotel – the very selection procedure is very thorough and at times
very long.
”We have a profound knowledge of our target group and know their
requirements and demands – and we pass these requirements on to
suppliers and other partners” adds Allan L Agerholm.
Fritz Hansen hassupplied a large amount of furniture to Hilton
Copenhagen Airport including Eggs and Swans to the lounge and
restaurant areas as well as Oxford chairs to the VIP meeting
room.
Allan Agerholm explains that Fritz Hansen was chosen as supplier
after a strict selection procedure where a large number of
potential suppliers were evaluated.
”We chose the furniture from Fritz Hansen from an architectural
and functionalist point of view – because the timeless design
matches the architecture of the hotel perfectly – but also because
the company fully complies with the demands we make on our
suppliers in terms of quality, delivery and environmental
issues”.
The environmental aspect being a critical parameter is confirmed
by the fact that Hilton was the first hotel in Denmark to receive
the Danish ”Svanemærket” – an approval which is only given to
companies complying with very strict environmental
requirements.
A special egg
In cooperation with the Danish Red Cross, Hilton Copenhagen
Airport has initiated a project where Fritz Hansen has manufactured
a special version of Arne Jacobsen’s Egg covered with painter’s
canvas - subsequently painted by two Danish artists Peter Bonde and
Erik A. Frandsen.
This unique chair is on display in the lobby where famous
individuals staying at the hotel are asked to autograph the chair –
eventually, the chair will be sold by auction and the proceeds from
the auction will go to the Red Cross.
”Our customized Egg has already caused so much attention among
the many international hotel guests – and once it is auctioned off
it will no doubt generate a large donation to Red Cross” concludes
Allan L Agerholm.
